THE RECTANGULAR RIBBON

The NUDE Rectangular Ribbon has earned its place as a go-to microphone for sources that can become brittle, spiky or over-bright under a more forward design. Its presentation is warm, natural and lusciously musical, capturing the source with an uncanny “you are there” realism — the balance, depth and dimensionality of how the human ear experiences it in the room — while rounding hard edges without flattening the performance.
At its heart are dual 1.8-micron aluminium ribbons feeding a transformer-isolated balanced output. The asymmetrical figure-8 pattern hears from the front and rear while its side nulls give you practical control over spill, room reflections and bleed.
Place it close to a loud guitar cabinet, out front of a drum kit, across a vocal, or in front of horns, strings and metallic acoustic instruments. The result is body, rounded transients and a top end that stays musical rather than hard.
Published headroom above 145 dB means loud sources are welcome. It is passive: no onboard electronics and no phantom power required — just the ribbon motor, transformer and the character of your preamp.

We used the Rectangular Ribbon mic as a violin and viola mic and also for a gentle a cappella vocal song. It was lovely on both — warm and smooth, and it tamed a quite sibilant vocal very well.
I got a pair. I use them for vocals and drums, but they’re ribbons, so you can use them on a loud amp or a ukulele.
I’d heard about the warm lows and natural high frequencies that the NUDE Ribbon had to offer… it provided an intimate and well-rounded acoustic guitar sound.

The practical questions that come up before you put a passive ribbon in front of a source.
Does the NUDE Rectangular Ribbon need phantom power?
No. It is a passive ribbon microphone, so phantom power is not required. Best practice is to switch phantom power off and use a properly wired balanced XLR cable.
Will I need a specific preamp?
No special preamp is required. Passive ribbons are naturally lower-output than condenser microphones, so a clean interface or preamp with around 60+ dB of gain is a useful starting point for quieter sources. Loud guitar cabinets, drums and brass need much less gain. An inline booster can help when you need extra clean gain.
How does the asymmetrical figure-8 pattern work?
The microphone hears from the front and rear while rejecting sound arriving from its sides. Because the response is asymmetrical, flip the microphone and listen to both faces; one may suit the source or room better. Use the side nulls to reduce spill, reflections or unwanted bleed.
What sources suit the Rectangular Ribbon?
It is particularly useful on guitar cabinets, drum overhead or front-of-kit positions, vocals, horns, saxophone, strings, acoustic guitar and bright percussion. It especially shines on metallic or overtone-rich sources — splashy or brittle cymbals, banjo, mandolin, resonator guitar, steel-string acoustic and bottleneck blues slide — where it can tame hard transients while preserving body, articulation and musical detail.
Can one Rectangular Ribbon record stereo?
One Rectangular Ribbon produces a mono signal. For spaced pair, X/Y or Blumlein stereo techniques, choose a matched pair of Rectangular Ribbons or the NUDE Stereo Ribbon microphone.
What comes with the microphone?
The microphone ships in a fitted blond-wood presentation case with its proprietary rectangular suspension mount.
How should I store and care for it?
Keep it dry and protected from dust, moisture and strong air movement. Do not blow into the microphone or place it in front of direct air blasts. Avoid drops and use phantom power switched off. Upright storage cannot hurt, but normal protected storage is suitable for a well-built modern ribbon.
