THE COMPLETE SMALL-DIAPHRAGM PAIR

Open. Natural. Ready for the Room.

A good small-diaphragm condenser pair should make placement feel revealing rather than onerous. The NUDE SDC's capture fast transients and deliver a natural balanced sound outcome with an accompanying kit that enables exact positioning and pattern control.

Each microphone arrives with interchangeable cardioid and omni capsules. Fit cardioid when you want focus, separation and a more controlled view of the room. Switch to omni when you want an open, natural perspective and more of the space around the performance. Together, the two capsule sets let the same matched pair move from close stereo detail to expansive room capture.

The supplied stereo adaptor bar brings both microphones onto one stand for deliberate X/Y, ORTF, spaced-pair and other compact stereo arrangements. Once the geometry is set, the complete array can be repositioned without rebuilding the relationship between the capsules - useful when the source moves, the balance changes or you return to a successful setup.

The pair is equally valuable apart. Split the microphones across hi-hat and snare, two acoustic instruments, separate percussion positions or any two sources that need compact, low-profile condenser detail.

With published headroom above 138 dB SPL, +48 V phantom operation and a fitted hard case for the complete kit, this is a practical stereo system designed to keep finding work.

Matched when the image matters. Independent whenever the session asks for something else.

WE LOVE LISTENING

Headphones On - Hear the Pair at Work

Three demonstrations put the matched Pencil Pair on piano and drums, including cardioid and omni overhead perspectives.

RECORDING APPLICATIONS

One Pair. Two Patterns. A Studio Full of Jobs.

Build a deliberate stereo image with the supplied bar and matched capsules - or separate the microphones whenever two independent sources need fast, natural condenser detail.

Drum overheads

Fast transient response, a balanced top end and a choice of cardioid focus or omni openness for a complete stereo kit picture.

Hear the drum session

Grand piano

Place the matched pair for stable width, articulate attack and the natural scale of the instrument without turning the hammers brittle.

Hear the piano comparison

Acoustic guitar

Use X/Y, ORTF or a measured spaced pair to balance string definition, body and the room around the performance.

Strings + ensembles

Capture violin, small ensembles and layered acoustic instruments with compact microphones that stay visually and physically out of the way.

Choir + live room

Cardioid capsules help define the ensemble; omni capsules open the perspective when the room deserves to be part of the recording.

Hi-hat, snare + percussion

Published headroom above 138 dB and a low-profile body make each microphone useful as an independent close or spot mic.

Room + ambience

Fit the omni capsules for a spacious, coherent pair that hears the performance and the acoustic around it.

Hear cardioid and omni

Two independent spot mics

Take the pair off the bar and split it across two instruments, two kit positions or two separate performers whenever stereo is not the job.

FROM NUDE OWNERS

The NUDE pencil condensers - Already Working Across Real Sessions

Owners put the Pencil Pair on drums, piano, acoustic guitar, ensembles and rooms - and consistently describe an open, detailed sound that avoids a brittle top end.

I really like the mics! I used them on my Evans dB series drum heads and cymbals for the video, and loved the raw audio that they caught. The NUDE mics will be a part of my more permanent setup.

Shon Medin

Drummer & Videographer · Medins Make Music · Minnesota, USA

I used the pair on piano on their first gig and was very happy with the sound with minimal messing around. Since then they have worked as jazz-drum overheads and on voices in a church requiem.

Mark Whitehouse

Recording Engineer · ProCopy

Don’t be fooled by the price. Used as a Glyn Johns pair on drums, they captured the entire frequency range with no harsh high mids or rough top end - and needed minimal mixing.

Azariah Felton

Composer / Producer · Perth, Australia

I’ve used them for drum overheads, an X/Y room, acoustic guitar and grand piano. They have a smooth, detailed top and are very difficult to beat - and the stereo bar is a great inclusion.

GOOD TO KNOW

Matched Pencil Pair FAQs

The practical questions that come up before you place a matched small-diaphragm pair in front of a session.

Do the NUDE Pencil condensers need phantom power?

Yes. Each microphone requires +48 V phantom power through a properly wired balanced XLR cable. For stereo use, switch phantom power on for both preamp or interface channels.

What is the difference between the cardioid and omni capsules?

Cardioid focuses pickup toward the front of the microphone and helps control spill and room sound. Omni hears evenly around the capsule for a more open, natural room perspective. Power down the channel before carefully unscrewing one capsule and fitting the other.

Which stereo techniques can I use?

The pair and supplied stereo bar support X/Y, ORTF, measured spaced-pair and other compact stereo arrangements. Capsule pattern, angle and distance should always be chosen by listening to the source, room and mono result.

What does the stereo adaptor bar add?

It places both microphones on one stand, helps establish deliberate spacing and angles, and lets you reposition the complete array without changing the relationship between the capsules. That means less stand clutter and easier recall of a successful setup.

Can I use the microphones separately?

Absolutely. Each is a complete condenser microphone. Remove them from the bar and split the pair across hi-hat and snare, two instruments, separate performers or any two sources that suit compact, natural condenser detail.

Which sources suit the matched Pencil Pair?

Drum overheads, piano, acoustic guitar, strings, choirs, ensembles, room and ambience recording are natural stereo applications. Individually, the microphones also suit hi-hat, snare, percussion and other focused spot duties.

What is included and how should I store it?

The fitted ABS hard case holds the matched microphones, cardioid and omni capsule sets, suspension mounts, thread adaptors and stereo bar. Keep the capsules clean, dry and protected, and return the complete kit to its case between sessions.
